Does Ceramic Coating Prevent Scratches
Ceramic coating does not make paint scratch-proof. It does make washing easier and helps against sun, salt and grime. Here is what it protects against and how to avoid new marks.

No, ceramic coating does not prevent scratches. It is a very thin layer, so it cannot stop stone chips, key marks, branch scratches or damage from automatic car wash brushes. Anyone who sells it as scratch-proof is overselling it.
What a coating does do is make washing easier. When dirt lets go with less effort, you rub the paint less, and that can reduce the light marks that come from washing. That is a maintenance benefit, not a shield.
What Ceramic Coating Does Protect Against
- Grime and road film sticking to the paint
- UV exposure, within the product's limits
- Bird droppings and bug residue, if removed promptly
- Salt air on coastal cars
- Loss of gloss from an unprotected surface
These matter in Hawke's Bay. It is one of New Zealand's sunniest regions, and suburbs like Ahuriri, Westshore and Haumoana live with salt air every day.
Where Most Scratches Actually Come From
On a typical daily driver, most fine scratches are not caused by anything dramatic. They build up from everyday contact:
- Automatic brush car washes
- Dirty sponges, mitts and towels
- Wiping dust off dry paint with a cloth or sleeve
- Bags, keys and shopping set down on the boot lid
- Branches and long grass along rural driveways
- Car park doors and trolleys
A coating changes none of these on its own. Changing the habits behind them does far more for your paint.
How Bay Does ItBay's coating gives the paint a protective layer that helps resist UV, salt residue, bird droppings and road grime, within limits. It is not a defence against impact or careless contact.
What About 9H Hardness Ratings
Hardness ratings come from specific tests and are easy to take out of context. A 9H label does not mean your car cannot be scratched in the real world.
If a product is sold on a hardness number, ask what practical benefit it gives you. The honest answer will be about easier cleaning and resistance to contamination, not immunity to scratches.
Can Ceramic Coating Hide Swirl Marks
No. A coating is clear and follows the surface underneath. Swirls already in the paint stay visible, and the extra gloss can even make them easier to see.
If you want swirls gone, paint correction comes before the coating. The coating then helps preserve that corrected finish.
Niah or Ben quotes paint correction in Hawke's Bay separately, so you only pay for the polishing your paint actually needs.
What Protects Against Stone Chips
Stone chips are an impact problem, and no coating stops them. Protecting against impact takes a physical film, which is a different product altogether and not one Bay installs.
Practical habits help too. Leave more room behind other vehicles on loose road surfaces, and avoid parking where doors and trolleys swing close.
Does Coating Protect Against Bird Droppings And Water Spots
It buys you time. The coating takes the first hit, so you have a better chance of cleaning droppings off before they mark the paint. It does not make the surface immune.
Near the coast and the estuary, bird droppings are a regular visitor. Soften them with water or a quick detailer spray and lift them off gently, rather than scrubbing.
Water spots can still form on top of a coating if droplets are left to dry in the sun. Dry the car after washing instead of letting it air dry.
How To Keep A Coated Car Free Of New Scratches
- Rinse loose dirt off before touching the paint
- Use clean wash mitts and a gentle car shampoo
- Keep wheel brushes away from the paint
- Never wipe a dusty car dry
- Dry with clean, soft towels
- Avoid automatic brush car washes
Technique matters more than any product. A coating helps a careful owner. It cannot save a car from a dirty sponge.
Can A Scratch Be Fixed After Coating
Light marks can often be polished out, but polishing removes the coating in that area, so the panel would need recoating afterwards. Scratches through the clear coat need paint repair, not more polishing.
So What Is A Coating Worth Buying For
Buy a coating for easier washing, a deeper gloss and a buffer against UV, salt and contamination. Those are real, everyday benefits for a car that lives in Hawke's Bay.
Do not buy it to make the car bulletproof. If someone promises scratch-proof paint, ask to see that promise in writing before you pay.
